What is Maternal-Fetal Medicine?
That’s a very common question. Most people will never meet a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist, so if this is your first time hearing the term, you’re in good company.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) is a specialized area of obstetrics focused on high-risk pregnancy care. MFM physicians complete additional years of training after becoming full-spectrum OB/GYNs to care for pregnancies involving complex medical conditions, pregnancy complications, fetal concerns, ultrasound findings, recurrent pregnancy loss, genetic screening questions, and other situations that may require more specialized evaluation or monitoring.
But high-risk pregnancy care is not just about managing complications. It’s also about helping patients understand what’s happening, what their options are, and what next steps actually mean for them and their baby.
My goal is to combine evidence-based medical expertise with clear, approachable communication so patients leave visits feeling more informed, more supported, and far less overwhelmed.
Common Reasons Patients Reach Out
Patients seek Maternal-Fetal Medicine care for many different reasons. Some people have pre-existing medical conditions and know they’ll need additional support during pregnancy. Others experience unexpected complications along the way. And some simply want clearer answers and a deeper understanding of what’s happening during pregnancy.
High-Risk Pregnancy Conditions
Pre-existing medical conditions, hypertension, diabetes, autoimmune disease, prior pregnancy complications, and pregnancies requiring additional monitoring or specialized care.
Ultrasound Findings & Genetic Screening
Support understanding ultrasound results, soft markers, genetic screening options, follow-up recommendations, and what findings may — or may not — mean during pregnancy.
Preconception Counseling
Guidance for patients planning pregnancy with medical conditions, medication questions, fertility concerns, or prior pregnancy complications.
Recurrent Pregnancy Loss or Prior Birth Trauma
Evidence-based evaluation and compassionate support for patients navigating recurrent miscarriage, prior pregnancy loss, or a previously traumatic birth experience.
Multiple Gestation
Specialized care and monitoring for twin and higher-order pregnancies.
Second Opinions & Complex Questions
For patients seeking additional clarity, reassurance, or a deeper understanding of complicated pregnancy-related concerns.
The Expert Care You Need and the Clarity You Deserve
One of the biggest frustrations many patients experience during high-risk pregnancy care is feeling like there’s never enough time to fully process what’s happening or ask every question they have.
My goal with telehealth consultations is to create space for those conversations while making specialized Maternal-Fetal Medicine care more accessible to patients who may not otherwise have easy access to it locally.
Whether we’re discussing medications, ultrasound findings, pre-existing medical conditions, pregnancy complications, or simply helping you better understand your options, these visits are designed to provide personalized, evidence-based guidance tailored to your specific situation.
As both a physician and educator, I believe patients deserve more than rushed explanations and complicated medical terminology. You deserve clear answers, thoughtful conversations, and the opportunity to feel informed and confident navigating your pregnancy moving forward.
